Lughnasadh

@ St. Peter’s

During the loaded timeframe of Lughnasadh/Cork Pride 2023, on an island in the middle of Abhainn Laoi (Lugh’s River), this Pagan Harvest Festival was held in a deconsecrated medieval church in the heart of Cork City.

Drawing together a variety of cultural practices, Lughnasadh sought to contextualise queer Irish creative discourse, questioning the heteronormative and post-colonial societal framework that people of marginalised genders and sexualities are subjected to.

A week long programme of events, workshops and gatherings; live music, guided meditation, film screenings, cuisine, literature, poetry & performance. All of this against the backdrop of an exhibition of contemporary art featuring work from a wide array of emerging, mid-career and established artists with an accompanying festival zine showcasing the works of 3 queer Irish authors.

Lughnasadh Podcast:

A special edition of the Tales from the Land podcast, Rev. Mel O’Driscoll (who opened the festival with a ceremony) chats with artist/curator Billy Lingwood about the significance of the timing and location of Lughnasadh 2023, some of the pitfalls of being a creative in a capitalist system and the relationship between culture and nature.
